Benefits of Dancing for Seniors

Is dancing for everybody?
Seniors who are interested in taking up dancing as a form of exercise should consult their doctor before beginning to make sure it is safe and healthy for them. Seniors should always do physical exercise at a pace that is comfortable for them. Dancing should not cause pain or discomfort. If it does, modifications may need to be made.

How can seniors get started?
Dance classes that are specifically designed for older adults may be offered at a local community center or fitness center. Seniors may even be surprised by how many different types of dance classes are offered and there is nothing wrong with trying a few before choosing one to stick with. Some popular forms are low-impact aerobics, ballroom dancing, and ballet-barre. For seniors who don’t have access to a fitness center or community center, instructional dancing videos that can be played at home can be a good alternative.

Keyline Home Care dances with seniors.
The Villa Rica Civic Center located in Villa Rica, GA holds a senior dance every first, third and fifth Friday of each month. Bernae Plechette, Founder and CEO of Keyline Home Care Solutions, took to the dance floor with local seniors at their most recent Friday night dance. “After completing an exhilarating round of the Electric Slide and the Cupid Shuffle, one can see how beneficial dance can be for both the heart and mind,” explained Plechette. “The seniors were a lot of fun and full of energy.”
